Description

Under a canopy of a tall and broad palm tree bisecting a vibrant blue field, and so hinting at the outline of the Tablets of the Law, the main panel portrays a rich panoply of intertwining flora and fauna: deer, antelope, ibex, peacock, crane and turtledove appear amongst vines and flowers. The main border displays peacocks, fountains and bunches of grapes; the two guard strips are inscribed with Hebrew, the outermost of these repeats the Song of Songs; the inner strip recites the lovely verse 2:12:

The blossoms have appeared in the land,
The time of singing has come
The song of the turtledove
Is heard in our land.

Woven at the very bottom under the guard strip are the words: ‘Marbadiah Jerusalem’ [“Jerusalem Carpet Workshop”].

The rug is striking in its original and non-naturalistic color scheme, blending colors so that they become both mellow and intoxicating. Its imagery evokes in clear festive terms the strong relationship between the people and the land of Israel.
