The Forgotten Judaica Seder Plate
The Centerpiece of our Collection
The Seder plate starts as flat copper sheet and is formed by hand-hammering. Then, using a chasing tool and mallet, the base of the plate is peened by the coppersmith who imbues the plate with a radiating texture. Each plate takes a week to complete. The Passover symbols, the parsley, shank bone, horseradish root, charoset, egg and greens, each modeled from life, are cast in sterling silver and applied to the plate.
We found our inspiration from the copper Passover plates fabricated in Syria and Persia, and from the 19th century English Gorham tradition of sterling silver appliqué on mixed metal. Although worlds apart, east meets west in this stunning seder plate.
